What is Rota Virus? Rota virus is the virus that causes severe diarrhea and vomiting among children below five years old. It is the second leading killer of under-five Filipino children, accounting for 3,500 deaths annually.
It is undeniable that special attention must be given to the health of our children, particularly because many of them are continuously and needlessly suffering from diseases that are either preventable or treatable.
According to studies almost all kids have had a rotavirus infection by the time they are five years old.
Signs and Symptoms
Kids with a rotavirus infection have fever, nausea, and vomiting, often followed by abdominal cramps and frequent, watery diarrhea. Kids may also have a cough and runny nose. As with all viruses, though, some rotavirus infections cause few or no symptoms, especially in adults.
Sometimes the diarrhea that accompanies a rotavirus infection is so severe that it can quickly lead to dehydration.
Signs of dehydration include:
- thirst
- irritability
- restlessness
- lethargy
- sunken eyes
- a dry mouth and tongue
- dry skin
- fewer trips to the bathroom to urinate, and (in infants) a dry diaper for several hours.
Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe, dehydrating diarrhea among children worldwide. Each year it causes:
- About 111 million cases of disease requiring home care only
- 25 million clinic visits
- 2 million hospitalizations
- more than 500,000 deaths in children aged five or younger
Treatment
The only treatment consists of preventing dehydration by providing fluids and salts until the disease runs its course. In the most serious cases, frequent vomiting makes oral rehydration ineffective.
Children who cannot keep down fluids urgently need intravenous fluids, or they risk dying from dehydration.

good thing that DOH include this vaccine because it is so expensive. i tink i spent 6k for this vaccine (2 vaccine).
Thanks for sharing. This is very informative. I just hope that the DOH will be able to implement the vaccination program nationwide. I hope that whatever budget was allocated for this program really go to the program and not in anyone's pockets. Whew,finally... after 3 attempts to post this comment!
Thanks for sharing I hope that it will include by the DOH on all new born
great and helpful post!
wow buti n lng at mas mura sa DOH or better its free..:)
I'm hopeful that this will be right away be implemented. This kind of vaccination for Rotavirus is badly needed by those newly born or infants in order for them to survive and live as what the Lord has predestined them to do. This will get through the entire system of society. So be it!
The best wish comes from Gil Camporazo of RandomThoughts!
Government should fund the DOH to provided quality health care and midications for young children. BTW that was useful article.
After I read your post, I wondered if my little cousin had this because before I left Zambo, one my younger cousins was having diarrhea :-s He was rushed to the hospital and we were really worried about him :( Good thing he's fine now..
This one is a great news!
Michi two drops would cost DOH P1,800 according to the info I gathered from the web. I hope the cost would be lowered down.
thanks for the information about the rotavirus... helps prevention. Yahweh bless. http://trunklocker.blogspot.com/2011/01/miracle-fruit-graviolaguyabano-cure-for.html

it would be a great help if it's free or subsidized by DOH...
a lot of useful info here, thanks!
Thanks for the helpful post! Hopefully DOH will be able to educated the parents specially in rural areas.
i would love to have my kids have this. we have this in the US.
Yes indeed Yuuki! Thanks for appreciating my article. I hope a lot of mothers out there read about this. Please share thanks!
I hope so too Violy!
If this is given for free by the Department of Health a lot of children would benefit and will be spared from that annual count of mortality rate.
If masiraan ako ng bait and have a baby again, definitely, this will be a must.
Thanks for sharing this.. I have no idea about this vaccine. I have to ask my sister-in-law if my little niece already have this. If not, I will encourage her to make it. Diarrhea is not a joke. Especially for infants and toddlers.
Thanks for sharing and I have to agree, DOH needs to do something about this, like subsidizing the vaccine as it is expensive.
Tatess I shared this info because I know that a lot of Filipino mothers are not yet aware that their children needed this vaccine. The Philippines is one of the first in ASIA to include this in the DOH expanded epi which is a good news for the children in the Philippines po. Swerte mo po nasa us po kayo mas protected rights ng children to live dyan. Sa Pilipinas minsan parang walang paki ang gobyerno. Nagalak nga po ako na at may vaccine na po na ang benipisyo ay pangkalahatan.
That is what the DOH is planning to do @ Nancy
I had a good laugh kay why naman ganyan statement mo po? Ha ha ha!
So True Julie!
That is the plan of DOH @ Chel
I'm happy to know the Rotavirus Vaccine is now included in our Immunization Programs :)

thanks for sharing this hoping that DOH can give every child a vaccine for rotavirus free..
